Course Details
Halq'eméylem Language II is an intermediate-level course in the Halq'eméylem language. At the end of the course, students will know an additional 250 high-frequency vocabulary items, will have mastered the entire sound system of the language, improved knowledge of the grammar, and be able to understand some traditional oral stories taken from the Stó:lô Nation archives. Students will also produce some short sections from the Stó:lô Nation archives using the Halq'eméylem vocabulary.

    Instructors Qualifications: Related Master's and/or Bachelor's Degree and/or designate of Language authority under auspice of instructor of record.
    Office Hours: 1.5 per week

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50 - 70%, Final 30 - 50%, Total 100 %. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
  • communicate accurately in a new set of situations;

  • understand, produce and discriminate all the sounds in the language;

  • express sentences at a more advanced level, and be able to process selections from traditional stories, and produce short sections of those stories; and

  • use methodology that continues to use vocabulary games dialogues as in INGL 140 & 141 integrating with careful study of oral texts.
  • Text and Materials: In addition to the CD-Rom games and textbooks below, students will be given access to the talking dictionary of the Halq’eméylem language (to be distributed on CD-Rom, during preparation). Students will also be supplied with cd-rom audio copies and transcriptions of at least two short stories recorded with Native speaking elders.
