Course Details
This course provides an introduction to the role of the Health Care Assistant within the British Columbia health care system. Students will be introduced to the healthcare team and the roles and functions of Health Care Assistants within the team. Students will also have opportunities to develop self-reflective skills required for competent practice and will be introduced to effective job-finding approaches.

  • Prerequisites : Grade 12, with minimum English 10 & Math 10 or equivalen

    Instructors Qualifications: Relevant Master's Degree
    Office Hours: 1.5 per week
    Contact Hours: 30

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%. Total 100%. Note: Students must achieve a minimum grade of C+ in order to proceed into further HTCA courses. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
  • display an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Health Care Assistants within the health care system in British Columbia;

  • contribute to the effective functioning of the healthcare team;

  • function in a responsible, accountable fashion recognizing legal and ethical parameters of the Health Care Assistant role;

  • apply self-reflection and self-appraisal processes in order to recognize and respond to own self-development needs as a care provider; and

  • confidently conduct a job-search process.
