Course Details
Practicum I is an introductory practicum to the work of being an Early Childhood Educator. Emphasis is placed upon gaining the skills needed to become a competent Early Childhood Education Assistant while under the direction of a qualified supervisor. Learners are provided the opportunity to apply their recent learning to the daily practice of working in an Early Childhood Education setting. Learners are expected to take a hands-on approach to working with and caring for children in their placement setting. This course includes 120 hours in a practicum setting plus nine hours of practicum seminar where learners will reflect upon their practicum experience.

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%, Total 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
    After working in the field, completing the assigned readings, carrying out the required activities, and participating in seminars, the learner will exhibit the following competencies and skills at the basic level and reflecting of both Aboriginal and mainstream culture:
  • Demonstrate professionalism and communicate effectively with sponsor teachers.

  • Observe, monitor, and record children's behaviours.

  • Utilize the practicum as learning experience by asking questions, taking initiative, and accepting feedback from instructors and sponsor teachers.

  • Assist teachers and children appropriately.

  • Respond appropriately to both the safety and needs of children.

  • Reflect on personal growth and experience.

  • Use the practicum as a learning experience by asking questions and taking initiative.

  • Achieve the required rating in all competencies connected to AECE 190 in the Child Care Sector Occupational Matrix for Aboriginal Early Childhood Education at the College of New Caledonia.
