Course Details
This course will examine both traditional and contemporary orality of the St'át'imc peoples. It will further expose to, and immerse students in St'át'imcets, enhance their understanding and speaking ability in conversation and song. Other aspects of the course include exposing the students to various contemporary and traditional activities including celebrations, community and recreational events and everyday events.

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%. TOTAL 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • demonstrate the ability to use short phrases including greetings and introductions, leaving messages, basic conversational phrases about people, events, food and weather; phrases referring to time, days of the week, the seasons and other unique phrases;

  • demonstrate orally an understanding of the use of proper protocol of oral tradition and spiritual activities;

  • explain orally the importance of the relationship amongst all entities;

  • present oral short speeches songs or poems in St’át’imcets;

  • exchange information about a particular oral tradition situation through Elder interaction in a natural setting;

  • participate in oral tradition through community visitations or observations;

  • tell a short legend in the language utilizing approximately 200 words; and

  • share the language with family (elder) and community members.
