Job Description:

NVIT anticipates the need for an instructor for a Culinary Arts program to be offered at the Merritt campus. This position is responsible for teaching students in an assigned field of study using a diverse set of instruction methods and tools. The position develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, and provides assessments of students' progress. The position will also assume responsibility of the NVIT Cafeteria that serves the NVIT community five days per week for breakfast and lunch. It also ensures the proper stewardship of college facilities, equipment and other inventories. As an Indigenous institution, NVIT expects that the program will explore the chef profession through the lens of the Indigenous community.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Teaches students using a diverse and systematic plan of lectures, presentations, demonstrations, discussion groups, laboratory work, shop sessions, seminars, case studies, field assignments and independent or group projects.

  • Develops curriculum, prepares teaching materials, and outlines for courses including audio visual and web-related materials where appropriate.

  • Prepares, administers and marks papers, tests, exams and other assessments to monitor and evaluate students' progress. Provides detailed feedback on student performance.

  • Assists and provides support to students and potential students by advising on program curricula and career decisions.

  • Maintains effective stewardship of classroom facilities, equipment, materials, software and tools.

  • Adheres to NVIT policies and procedures including being available to students and maintaining confidentiality of student information.

  • Participates in departmental and college meetings and events. Consults with other College departments and may serve on committees concerning matters such as budgets, curriculum revision, and course and certificate or diploma requirements.

  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills in English language (oral and written).



Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated recent work experience of at least 10 years as a certified journeyman (Red Seal) cook and a minimum 2 years managerial experience;

  • Post-secondary teaching experience with Indigenous students;

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the tourism and hospitality industry with specific emphasis in the cooking industry;

  • Excellent interpersonal and business communication skills in English language (oral and written); and

  • Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing.
