Course Details
Secwepemctsín II is a beginning level course that will explore the traditional knowledge of the land in the Secwepemc Language. It is a continuation of Secwepemctsín I. Learning activities are designed to teach students how to identify common land and river locations, resource gathering sites, and connections to the spiritual landscape. The course will use communicative style methodologies and focus on oral comprehension and production. Activities will include immersion-like methods, total physical response storytelling, storyboards, and the use of traditional texts.

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%. Total 100%. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • communicate in a variety of cultural situations;
  • demonstrate the ability to express ideas about human activities associated with place and resource gathering;

  • demonstrate a basic comprehension of Secwépemc stories associated with resource gathering, such as:

  • - Coyote Juggles His Eyes,
    - The Suckerfish,
    - The Lizard, etc.;
  • show in short dialogues, the ability to use target grammatical constructions; and,
  • produce common phrases.
