Course Details
This course focuses on pathophysiology as it relates to acute disease and illness of clients across the lifespan, specifically the care of the client experiencing acute illness including nursing interventions and treatment options. Implications of the acute exacerbation of chronic illness will be addressed. Cultural diversity in healing practices will be explored as well as evidenced informed research and practice.

    Procedure:
    Assignments 50-70%, Final 30-50%, Total 100%. NB. Minimum B- grade is required in this course to progress into further PRNS courses. Grading procedures follow NVIT policy.
    Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
  • explain pathophysiology as it relates to selected common acute illnesses of clients across the lifespan;

  • explain the pathophysiology and nursing management of shock (cardiogenic, hypovolemic, neurogenic, anaphylactic, septic);

  • recognise and explain the pathophysiology and nursing management of fluid and electrolyte imbalances;

  • explain nursing management of common acute diseases and acute exacerbations of acute illnesses of clients across the lifespan;

  • identify traditional healing practices related to the acute illness experience;

  • describe the impact of cultural diversity in health and healing; and

  • access relevant best practice information to support learning.
