The Continuing Studies department offers a variety of health and safety, personal development and cultural interest courses, as well as, many online courses through “ed2go”.
All courses delivered on campus are offered on a cost recovery basis therefore early registration is essential, as insufficient enrollment will result in course cancellation. A list of Continuing Studies courses is found below. For course description, please click the course title.
Tuesday, June 6th 9:00am-3:30pm NVIT Merritt Campus Cost: $150
This 5-hour course is intended to help reduce the risk of wildlife conflict for people who work or recreate in wilderness settings. The course will cover safety concerning various species, including bears (black and grizzly), cougars, wolves, coyotes, rattlesnakes, deer and moose (species list can be adapted as required).
The course is comprised of a classroom component and a practical field component where participants practice the safe deployment of inert bear spray. The classroom component is a combination of lecture and discussion. The class will be encouraged to engage in discussions around wildlife safety with the instructor. The PowerPoint supported presentation includes locally obtained photos and videos of wildlife along with a showing of the industry standard “Staying Safe in Bear Country” video.
The course instructor, Frank Ritcey, has a lifetime of experience in the great outdoors and created the WildSafeBC program for the BC Conservation Foundation during his tenure as Provincial Coordinator for that organization. He has presented wildlife safety training for private companies, municipal governments, and First Nations crews throughout the province.
Wednesday, June 14th, 2023 8:30am-4:30pm NVIT Merritt Campus Cost: $135 Minimum Age: 15 yrs
Basic one-day course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
July 10th - 21st, 2023 8:30am-4:30pm NVIT Merritt Campus Cost: $1, 002.40 Minimum Age: 16 yrs
Requirements: Must bring Government issued ID
Week 1 – Monday - Friday Week 2 – Monday- Thursday Registration Deadline: Friday, June 30th, 2023
Occupational First Aid Level 3 is a 2 week/70 hour program designed to further first aid training and knowledge. The OFA Level 3 course is suitable for people in these industries: lumber mill, pulp and paper mill, medic for oil and gas in BC (Alberta may require extra training), large logging companies, large road construction and flagging. No prior first aid knowledge required to attend this course. All students must be at least 16 years old and physically able to perform first aid.
Thursday, August 24th - Friday, August 25th, 2023 8:30am-4:30pm NVIT Merritt Campus Cost: $200 Registration Deadline: August 10, 2023

A food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for food service establishment operators and front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important food safety and worker safety information including food-borne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing.

To register for any of the courses above, please complete the registration form and return with payment to NVIT. Completed registration forms can be dropped off on campus or emailed to info@nvit.bc.ca . Payment can be made with cash, debit or credit card on campus or by credit card over the phone. No time to take a course on campus? Try one of our online courses offered in partnership with “ed2go”. These non-credit courses allow students to work at their own pace, on their own schedule.
Courses run for six weeks, with two lessons released each week for the duration of the course. Once a lesson has been released, students may access it at their convenience. At the end of the course, there is a two-week grace period to allow for completion of any outstanding assignments.
