What’s it like to work at NVIT? As BC’s Indigenous Public Post-Secondary Institute, we empower learners by strengthening voice and identity through education. As an Indigenous institution with an Indigenous mandate, diversity, equity, and inclusion are imbedded in our policies and practices. NVIT is a workplace where everyone is family, our Elder’s Council sits at the heart of the community, and the support offered to learners and employees is grounded in holistic wellness.

Our Merritt campus is located on the unceded traditional territories of the Nle?kepmx and Syilx people. Merritt, BC is a small community nestled in the Nicola Valley. It is ideally situated for those who seek a peaceful country living with easy access to urban centres. It is a one-hour drive to Kamloops and Kelowna, and a three-hour drive to Vancouver. Merritt is known as the “Country Music Capital of Canada” for its wealth of country music attractions, activities, and events.

NVIT’s second campus, located in Burnaby, BC is located on the unceded traditional territory of the Coast Salish. The three host nations of this region are Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam. Burnaby has one of the highest open-space-to-resident ratios in North America, with 25% of the land designated to parks and open spaces.

NVIT also offers employment opportunities in First Nations communities throughout British Columbia and across Canada – both virtually and in-person. Community Education provides students with an opportunity to learn in their own community, which supports students who do not wish to move away from their community or are currently employed.

“In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn.” This is the most rewarding job I have ever had, and I am grateful to NVIT.
L. Demaeyer, Social Work Instructor
“I am blessed to have the opportunity to instruct at a pioneering Indigenous post-secondary institution that values diversity and inclusivity. When you are grateful, fear disappears, and abundance appears. Elders, students, staff and faculty, through their support and cheerfulness, make my day truly enjoyable.”
K. Wallace, Culinary Arts Department Chair
“Working at NVIT means being part of a circle that uplifts Indigenous knowledge and values. As a Health Department Chair and Health Instructor from the Lil’wat Nation in St̓át̓imc Territory, I carry the teachings of our Elders — that true health is about balance of body, mind, spirit, and community. At NVIT, we can create space for students to learn in ways that reflect who they are and where they come from. It’s a place where we walk with the Ucwalmícw and honour the strength of our ancestors.”
S.F. Minnabarriet, Health Programs Department Chair
