ASSESSING SKILLS, EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES

Community-Based Assessment

Welcome to NVIT’s Community-Based Assessments (CBAs), a valuable service tailored to prospective learners seeking to fulfill high school graduation requirements or pursue post-secondary education. Designed to provide individuals with an understanding of their current skill levels in English and math, CBAs offer a localized and supportive approach within your own community.

What Is It?

CBAs encompass a comprehensive process to support learners:

  • Assessment preparation workshop
  • Self-paced assessment
  • Assessment review
  • Individualized educational plans
  • Summary of results

Purpose

The primary goal of CBAs is to encourage education and empower prospective learners with insights into their academic proficiency levels. By offering a clear understanding of current skills, CBAs facilitate informed decisions about educational pathways.

Community Involvement

Communities play a crucial role in the success of CBAs by providing space for assessment services and offering invaluable support such as elder guidance or an opening prayer. This collaborative effort fosters a supportive environment for learners.

NVIT Support

NVIT ensures the seamless implementation of CBAs by covering all travel costs for assessors, providing comprehensive assessment materials, and delivering follow-up reports for ongoing support and progress monitoring.

What It's Not

It’s important to note that the CBA is not a traditional test. Instead, it serves as a dynamic tool to determine academic levels and guide individuals on their educational journey.

At NVIT, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. Through CBAs, we strive to empower individuals to pursue their educational aspirations with confidence and clarity. Join us in embracing a culture of lifelong learning and growth.

Quote from kʷúkʷpiʔ Stuart Jackson, Chief of Lower Nicola Indian Band

“The Community-Based Assessments program is an excellent tool for any Indigenous community to research, explore and, more importantly, identify community needs for education. This program provides an opportunity for communities to support their members by measuring their current academic levels, which helps to determine the next steps for education and training.

I fully support this program, and I commend NVIT on this initiative. This program will empower our people and provide the confidence and encouragement to believe that advancing their education can lead to a better quality of life. More employment opportunities can and will surface for our people participating in this assessment program.

What is unique about the CBA program is that it can occur right in your community. Instead of you going to the program, the program comes to you. I am very proud to advocate this program and encourage all community members to consider participating in the CBA program. The Community-Based Assessments program can open opportunities for all our people. This program can make dreams a reality and make our communities a better place to live in.”
