Story of Becoming Coyote Travelling

…Coyote spent his winters in the Nicola Valley and in other times of the year he would travel about the world making transformations, he gave names to different parts of the country. Along his travels, Coyote would make a hill here, a bench or plain there; a rocky bluff here, a grassy slope there; bushes or trees of certain kinds here, and there, widen or narrow a river, make shallow or deep water, make canyons, falls, and rapids; and so on. These things were for the good of the people…

…We also know that sometime later, the people made NVIT and that NVIT was made for the good of the people, it is a place where people make transformations to their own realities…

Community Education is very similar in that, like Coyote, NVIT also travels throughout the land creating access to education for transformation within Indigenous communities. Coyote is often breaking rules and providing valuable teachings through his misadventures. These teachings have strong ties to Indigenous values, knowledge, spirituality, and overall worldviews. NVIT Community Education also challenges the norms…The methods used to ensure Indigenous communities have access to relevant and quality training is not the standard within the BC public-post-secondary system…For 40 years, NVIT has “travelled” throughout the province and across the country sharing all that NVIT has to offer with our partner communities.

Providing Opportunity

Community Education

Community Education (CE) at NVIT offers a unique approach to learning, bringing educational opportunities directly to Indigenous communities across British Columbia and Canada. This model allows learners to study in their own community, accommodating those who prefer to stay close to home or who are balancing work commitments. NVIT’s CE Department extends the full range of programs and courses available at NVIT campuses to these communities and is flexible in developing new programs tailored to meet local needs and aspirations.

Community-based delivery helps learners to pursue NVIT certificates, diploma programs, or individual courses from home by bringing the classroom directly to their community. NVIT collaborates closely with community training schedules and requirements, ensuring accessible and high-quality public post-secondary education.

If you feel that NVIT can support your community efforts to create access to education and have questions about the NVIT Programs, please do not hesitate to connect with Community Education at coyotetravels@nvit.ca to learn more.
