Student Opportunities

Learners at NVIT have numerous opportunities to get involved and contribute to the NVIT community, while also developing essential skills for their future careers. By engaging in various student roles, learners can gain hands-on experience, enhance their leadership and communication abilities, and build meaningful connections. Opportunities include serving on the Board of Governors, where students can help shape the institution’s mission and vision, or participating in the Education Council, which influences academic matters. Additionally, students can join the NVIT Student Society, become Student Ambassadors, or work as Student Library Assistants. Each of these roles allows learners to be active participants in their education, fostering personal growth and a stronger sense of community at NVIT.

Board of Governors

The Board of Governors consists of eight or more members appointed by the Province of British Columbia from nominations received from the Board of Governors, and four elected positions, two from the students and two from faculty and the staff at NVIT. The Board sets our Mission, Values, and Vision provides overall direction and is a key link with communities. The Board has authorities and responsibilities determined by provincial legislation. Elections for student positions happen annually in September. New students are welcome to apply.

Education Council

This council is primarily responsible for academic matters as defined in the College and Institute Act. Membership consists of faculty, support staff, learners and administrators, as legislated by the College and Institute Act. The Education Council meets on a bi-monthly basis and is supported by sub-committees as well as the Dean’s office. Elections for student positions happen annually in September. New students are welcome to apply.

The NVIT Student Society is a learner-governed entity that is responsible for allocating student activity fees on behalf of the learner population. It is dedicated to fostering a cooperative and democratic environment that prioritizes student interests and strengthens the student community. By encouraging collaboration, the society offers services that enhance the learning experience, promote personal growth, and build a strong sense of belonging among peers. Through open communication and the sharing of experiences, skills, and ideas, the Student Society seeks to create an accessible and high-quality post-secondary education system that values student representation and rights, while recognizing the vital role of education in society. Elections for student positions happen annually in September. New students are welcome to apply.

The NVIT Student Ambassadors Program is designed to keep students informed about current events and activities across both campuses while providing opportunities for personal and professional development. Through creating content, organizing events, and collaborating with the recruitment team to represent NVIT to the public, student ambassadors can enhance their interpersonal, creative, leadership, and professional skills. This role empowers learners to take an active part in shaping the NVIT community while gaining valuable experience in communication, event planning, and public engagement. All registered students with good academic standing are welcome to apply via our Communications Planner.

The Student Library Assistant at NVIT supports the daily operations of the library by helping students, staff, and faculty locate resources, answer basic inquiries, and assist with library technology. They will also be responsible for organizing materials, shelving books, maintaining a welcoming environment, and providing assistance with library programs or events. This role offers valuable experience in customer service, organization, and teamwork while contributing to the overall learning environment at NVIT.
