A Step-by-Step Guide for NVIT Students

Accessing and Managing U-Pass BC

This guide explains how NVIT students studying in Metro Vancouver can access the U-Pass BC program, request their monthly pass, and apply for exemptions if eligible.

1. Confirm Eligibility

U-Pass fees apply to students taking courses in Metro Vancouver who are assessed Student Society fees. The program is mandatory for all eligible students registered in Vancouver campus courses, with a minimum enrolment requirement of typically 3 credits (21 days in length) or 12 hours per week.

2. Get a Compass Card

If you don’t already have a Compass Card, you can purchase one at Compass Vending Machines located at SkyTrain, SeaBus, or West Coast Express stations, as well as at London Drugs, Waterfront Station, or online at compasscard.ca.

Student Services at NVIT may also have Compass Cards available at the start of each semester, and students can email registrarsoffice@nvit.ca to request one. The cost of a Compass Card is a $6 refundable deposit when purchased through vending machines.

3. Set Up Your U-Pass BC Account

To set up your U-Pass BC account, visit upassbc.translink.ca, select Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, and log in using your NVIT credentials. Once logged in, link your Compass Card number to your U-Pass BC account to activate the service.

4. Request Your U-Pass Each Month

You can request your U-Pass starting on the 16th of the current month for the following month. Once requested, allow up to 24 hours for the pass to load onto your Compass Card. U-Pass fees are collected through NVIT student fees and are not paid directly to TransLink.

5. Tap and Ride

After requesting your U-Pass, please allow up to 24 hours for activation. Once active, simply tap your Compass Card on buses, SkyTrain, or SeaBus gates to travel across Metro Vancouver.

Exemptions, Deadlines, and Fees

NVIT students may apply for a U-Pass exemption by submitting the NVIT U-Pass Exemption Request Form if they already have a U-Pass from another Metro Vancouver post-secondary institution, hold a valid transit pass that covers the full NVIT term, have a documented disability preventing U-Pass use, or are approved under “special circumstances” (up to 1% of students per semester). Exemption applications must be submitted before or during Week 1 of the semester, with decisions made in Week 1.

Monthly U-Pass requests open on the 16th of each month for the following month. Exemption requests apply to Fall (September), Winter (January), and Summer (May) semesters only.

The current U-Pass rate is $46.00 per month (until April 30, 2025). Future rates are as follows:
