Robert W. Sterling Sr. Memorial Library

The NVIT Library at the Merritt and Vancouver campuses is designed to meet the learning needs of students, and the teaching needs of instructors and staff. The library promotes the ongoing development of research skills and independent study habits to encourage lifelong learning among students. The library staff is here to assist everyone, and all questions are welcome.

Library Policies

It is necessary to have a borrower’s card to access library services. This also requires the user to have and periodically check an email account used for hold and overdue notices. For NVIT staff & students, this is, by default, your NVIT email (n#######@nvit.ca).

Loan Periods

Students, staff, and members of the NVIT community can borrow materials free of charge. Loans may be renewed if material is not reserved for another borrower.

Books – 3 weeks
Videos – 1 week
Periodicals – Overnight
Vertical Files – Overnight
Technology – Variable

NOTE: Students with unreturned library materials may have transcripts held and registration delayed until materials are returned or replaced.

Interlibrary Loans

NVIT has interlibrary loan agreements with other BC libraries (both public and academic) that allow our patrons to borrow their materials through NVIT. Delivery times and loan periods may vary. We also have reciprocal borrowing arrangements with many BC academic libraries, allowing NVIT students to borrow materials directly from those libraries using their NVIT ID. Please speak to the Director of Library Services or Library Coordinator for more details

Fines

The library reserves the right to charge patrons for lost or damaged items. This cost includes the price of the item plus a $10.00 processing fee. These fees may be reduced or waived at the discretion of the Library Director.

Embracing the future

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is fast moving from the pages of science-fiction to the reality of our daily lives.  This guide aims to help students recognize where AI can help them and where it cannot, and how to use it ethically in their assignments.

Like all technologies, AI can be a powerful tool for your studies, but you need to understand how to use it, when to use it, and when not to use it.  It should never be a replacement for you doing If you aren’t sure about a possible use of AI, the library is always here to help you.  You can contact us by phone or email.

This guide has been adapted from the AI library guide written by Kwantlen Polytechnic University, which can be found here.

APA (American Psychological Association)

The APA has issued an article, APA Style Guide to Electronic References.  It is available from the NVIT library. Since this has to be purchased, the major recommendations for common formats have been provided in an article summary.  See also the following but please note that the information in most is not current.

  • APA Tutorial – Within the tutorial, you will find examples of APA papers, examples of references and other useful information.
  • Landmark’s Citation Machine – APA Style Essentials by Douglas Degelman, Ph.D., and Martin Lorenzo Harris, Ph.D.  A 6th Edition guide that has links to the key sections of a paper.
