Internal Year-End Awards

Year-End Internal Awards are presented annually at the end of each academic year. Most of these awards are automatically determined by the NVIT Awards Adjudication Committee, with all full-time students being considered for each award determined by the set criteria.

Some awards require the student to fill out an application. Click on the award title to download the application package for those awards. THE APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR THESE AWARDS IS ON MARCH 15, 2025!

ABCFP ForesTrust Bursary

$1000

Awarded to a first-year, full-time student in the Environmental Resources Technology program who demonstrates academic achievement and extracurricular activities.  The student may show interest in pursuing registration with the ABCFP.  The Department Head will determine the recipient.

ABEABC Bursary

$100 x 2

Awarded to two full-time students in Developmental Studies (College Readiness, Bridging to Trades or Employment Skills) who left school without completing grade 11, demonstrated excellence and outstanding progress, put forth their best effort and are role models for other students, demonstrated leadership skills and being good team members. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipients.

BCASW Bursary

$250

Awarded to a full-time 3rd year Bachelor of Social Work student who is active in school affairs, demonstrates class participation and leadership skills, shows strong academic performance, demonstrates financial need and shows outstanding achievement. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

BC Oil and Gas Commission Scholarship

$1000 x 3

Awarded to three full-time Indigenous students from a BC First Nation (non-status/self-identifying included). One award to a student attending Merritt, one attending Vancouver and one attending Community Education. Students must be enrolled in a minimum 60% course load in any program or field. Students must be in good academic standing (3.0 GPA, B average) and demonstrate financial need. Students are expected to submit an application and financial need statement. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipients.

Campus Living Centres Bursary

$500

Awarded to a full-time outstanding student from any program at the Merritt campus who can demonstrate his or her contribution to student life at NVIT through direct involvement in at least 2 of the following areas:

  • social activities organized through recognized student bodies such as student governments, clubs and formalized residence groups;
  • sporting activities such as intramurals, varsity athletics, and residence-organized events; or
  • academic and educational activities such as tutoring, organized study groups, educational campaigns, and fundraising initiatives.

The student must reside in a residence managed by Campus Living Centres. The student must have maintained a C+ (65%) average or better in the year in which they apply. Students employed by Campus Living Centres are not eligible. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

Canadian Institute of Forestry Technical Silver Ring

Silver Ring

Since 1967, the Canadian Institute of Forestry has presented silver rings to graduating Environmental Resources Technology students from recognized Canadian Forestry programs. CIF silver rings are available for purchase to welcome new forestry professionals to unite them at the national level. It is worn on the little finger of the left hand. The engraving of the maple leaf seeming to grow towards the tip of the finger symbolizes the growth of professional opportunities. A silver ring costs $65 for non-members and $45 for members plus tax. Please see and Academic and Financial Planner to make an order. The deadline to order and pay for a ring will be March 31.

Canadian Institute of Forestry Gold Medal Award

Gold Medal

Awarded to a full-time student in the Environmental Resources Technology program at the Merritt campus who demonstrates outstanding scholarship, sportsmanship and citizenship throughout the years of the program. The ENRT department will determine the recipient. The deadline to apply is August 15th by 4:30 PM each year or the last business day before the deadline.

Corix Water Utility Award

Awarded to a full-time Indigenous student studying on the Vancouver campus who identifies they are from either the səl̓ilwətaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsleil-Waututh), šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmaɁɬ təməxʷ (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh-ulh Temíx̱w (Squamish), Hul’qumi’num, Tsawwassen, Lək̓ʷəŋən, or Stó:lō territories. Students must also speak to their connection to their community. If no applicant from any of the listed areas applies, then applicants from the next closest band/nation geographically will be considered. Students must also speak to their connection to their community. The NVIT Registration Office must receive applications by 4:30 PM on March 15.

Dwayne Yamelst Memorial Scholarship

$500

Awarded to a first-year, full-time student in the Environmental Resources Technology program who shows academic prowess by achieving the highest grade point average and then plans to continue into second-year studies. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient.

Eldon Nast Memorial Scholarship

$250

Awarded to a full-time student in Developmental Studies (College Readiness, Bridging to Trades and Employment Skills) at the Merritt campus who is registered in a minimum 60% course load, who attends regularly, achieves strong grades and demonstrates financial need. The student may show interest in registering for a higher-level program at NVIT. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

Felix and Bernice Squakin Memorial Scholarship

$250 x 2

Awarded to two (2) full-time students in a one-year certificate program at the Merritt campus who are dedicated to academic achievement and commitment to citizenship, especially helping others. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

FORED BC Bursary

$500

Awarded to all students of self-declared, Aboriginal ancestry from any program at NVIT. Students must demonstrate financial need and obtain high grades. Students must also write a short paragraph on how Traditional Ecological Knowledge may be or has been applied to environmental resources management in their territory, community or Band decision-making. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15.

Governor General of Canada Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion

Awarded to a full-time graduating student receiving a two-year diploma credential who achieved the highest GPA at NVIT overall. The applicant must be enrolled in an 80% minimum course load in both the fall and spring semesters. There is no monetary award associated with the Medal. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

Helen Meilleur Memorial Library Research Scholarship

$500

Awarded to a full-time student in any program at the Merritt campus who demonstrates strong research skills. Students must submit an essay previously marked by one of their instructors to the NVIT Registrar’s Office. The Library staff will determine the recipient. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15.

Lieutenant Governor of BC Collegiate Silver Medallion

Silver Medallion

Awarded to a full-time graduating student in a one-year certificate credential based on high GPA and community involvement. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

LNIB Development Corporation Bursary

$500

Awarded to a full-time Indigenous student in the Environmental Resource Technology program from one of the local Bands; based on academic achievement and financial need. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient.

Mercer Scholarship

$500 x 2

Awarded to two (2) full-time students enrolled in a program administered by the Business Department who will pursue a career in leadership and/or human resources. (Aboriginal Community Economic Development, Administrative Studies, Tourism Management, First Nations Public Administration, Business Management, Aboriginal Governance and Leadership). The students must have achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate the following values during the academic year:

  • Passion to be the best: this is not necessarily the person who gets the best grades, but one who strives for excellence;
  • Respect for diversity: being inclusive, listening to and collaborating with others;
  • Integrity: knowing what’s right and acting responsibly;
  • Innovation: thinking outside the box and presenting creative solutions to assignments;
  • Dedication: to quality and success; and
  • Empowered and accountable for the work they do and the actions they take.

The Department Head, with input from the business faculty, will automatically determine the recipient.

Micheal Gordon Street Memorial Bursary

$1000

Awarded to one (1) full-time student from the Merritt campus, who enrolled in a minimum 80% course load in any field of study (Developmental Education, Employment Skills Access and Bridging to Trades are excluded). The recipients must demonstrate financial need, dedication to their studies, display citizenship qualities and describe their balance between home (including hobbies), work and educational lifestyles. The student must have attained a minimum 3.0 (B) grade point average in their current year of studies. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient.

NRTG Austin Ingram Award

$1,500 per academic year, may be split equally between a maximum of three recipients.

The Natural Resources Training Group (NRTG) is proud to offer the Austin Ingram Award in loving memory of past NVIT Environmental Resources Technology student Austin Ingram. Austin was a vibrant member of the community and is dearly missed. The Award was established to recognize students who demonstrate the same empathy and kindness towards fellow students, instructors, and community members that Austin did. The Austin Ingram Award is awarded to up to three (3) full-time students graduating from the Environmental Resources Technology Diploma on the Merritt campus. The recipient(s) must meet their respective program’s minimum grade point averages. The Department Head is responsible for determining the award recipient(s). Recipients must have demonstrated the traits mentioned above. The $1,500 per academic year may be split equally between a maximum of three recipients.

NVIT Academic Achievement Award

$400 x 13

Awarded to thirteen (13) full-time students who demonstrate the highest GPA in the current academic year in their respective programs enrolled in a minimum 80% course load in both semesters. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

One award is available in each of the following program areas:

  • Aboriginal Early Childhood Education
  • Administrative Studies (Office Administration, Executive Assistant, Aboriginal Governance and Leadership, First Nations Public Administration, Tourism Management, Aboriginal Community Economic Development, Business Administration)
  • Developmental Studies (Access to Employment Skills & College Readiness)
  • Educational Studies (Native Adult Instructor & Post-Secondary Education Coordinator)
  • Health (Health Care Assistant & Access to Practical Nursing)
  • Human Services (Aboriginal Community Health Development, Aboriginal Human Services, Foundational Skills of Counselling, Understanding Disabilities in Human Services, Chemical Addictions & First Nations Speech and Language)
  • Justice Studies (Associate of Arts-Criminology, Aboriginal Leadership and Justice Studies)
  • Language (Indigenous Language)

NVIT Administrative Staff Award-Certificate

$250

Awarded to a full-time graduate student in a 100-level or higher certificate program who is enrolled in an 80% course load with the highest grade point average. (A minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be attained to be eligible.) The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

NVIT Administrative Staff Matching Award-Diploma

$250

Awarded to a full-time graduate student in a 200-level or higher diploma program who is enrolled in an 80% course load with the highest grade point average. (A minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be attained to be eligible.) The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

NVIT Elders' Council Bursary

$250 x 2

Awarded to two (2) full-time students in any program; one from the Merritt campus and one from the Vancouver campus, based on demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and performed community service. The recipients must meet their respective program’s minimum grade point averages. The recipients will also be required to attend the first Elders’ Council meeting the following October and/or November to introduce themselves to the NVIT Elders’ Council. Students will complete an application form and submit a 500-word essay (maximum) on the following: who you are; why you are going to school; what program you would like to graduate from (what you would like to become after graduation [career]); demonstrated financial need; and performed community service. Please include a title page named “NVIT Elders’ Council Bursary”; include the date and year of the essay submission, including your full name. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 30.

NVIT Leadership Award

$250 x 6

Only staff and faculty will have access to this award application to nominate students using the following criteria:

  • Students must demonstrate dedication while being active leaders in both the NVIT internal and external communities.
  • Students must actively participate in their learning environments and be recognized for their efforts to assist in the development of the communities.
  • Students must also maintain 60% course loads with a minimum 3.0 grade point average during the last twelve (12) months of study.

The deadline to nominate students is February 17. Once nominated, students will be contacted by the Registrar’s office to complete the essay portion and application package. Students will be required to type 150-200-word, double-spaced essays on their dedication to the NVIT and external communities and participation in their learning environments. Six (6) students will be chosen for the NVIT Leadership Award from all who have been nominated and submitted essays. The deadline to submit the essay is March 15, by 4:30 PM.

NVIT Student Housing Academic Incentive Award

$100 Eatery Gift Certificate x Various

Awarded to returning students who lived in our Student Residence during the last semester and returned to live in residence for a second semester and who achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and enrolled in a minimum of 3 courses per semester.

NVIT Student Society Year-End Award for Merritt

The NVIT Student Society Year End Award is designed to support any learner who has paid the Student Activity Fee with their future endeavours. This Award is open to any learner of any age with a full-time or part-time course load over the course of the 24-25 awards academic year who was registered in any program on the Merritt campus or a Community Education program within 100k of the Merritt campus, who paid the Student Activity Fee. One (1) Award of $1,000 will be provided by the NVIT Student Society to support a learner associated with the Merritt campus. The NVIT Registrar’s Office must receive applications by 4:30 PM on March 15. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please drop off or email the awards package.

NVIT Student Society Year-End Award for Vancouver

The NVIT Student Society Year End Award is designed to support any learner who has paid the Student Activity Fee with their future endeavours. This Award is open to any learner of any age with a full time or part time course load over the course of the 24-25 awards academic year who was registered in any program on the Vancouver campus, or a Community Education program within 100km of the Merritt campus, who paid the Student Activity Fee. One (1) Award of $1,000 will be provided by the NVIT Student Society to support a learner associated with the Vancouver campus. The NVIT Registrar’s Office must receive applications by 4:30 PM on March 15. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please drop off or email the awards package.

Pat Brownlee-Baker Memorial Scholarship

$500 x 2

Awarded to two (2) Indigenous female students enrolled in any program, any level of studies, full or part-time studies, from either campus, who were previously released from incarceration and demonstrate financial need. If no students apply, the award will be opened to all Aboriginal female students. Students must submit an application with two (2) instructor character reference letters attesting to the student’s skills and abilities to be eligible for the scholarship. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient.

Sharon McIvor Award of Excellence

$1000

Awarded to a full-time Aboriginal female from either campus who achieved a minimum 3.0-grade point average and who demonstrated leadership skills while attending NVIT. This award was donated by the NVIT Board of Governors who recognizes the consistent excellence in teaching by Sharon McIvor and her significant impact on the personal and academic growth of our students. Sharon officially received national recognition by accepting her own teaching award of excellence from the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

SISCO Bursary

$500

Awarded to a full-time first-year Environmental Resources Technology program student who achieved the highest grade point average in three courses: Silvics and Dendrology (ENRT 150), Soil Science (ENRT 155), and Principles of Ecology (ENRT 170). The Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

Scw'exmx Tribal Council Bursary

$500

Scw’exmx Tribal Council is awarding this bursary to a full-time student 1st or 2nd year, who is a member of one of the Constituent member bands: Coldwater Indian Band, Nooaitch Indian Band, Shackan Indian Band and Upper Nicola Indian Band. This student must be enrolled in one of the following: Language program, Culture, Lands, Title & Rights, Fisheries, Finance or Administration with the highest GPA in the fall and spring semesters. This award is sponsored by the Scw’exmx Tribal Council. Students do not need to apply; the NVIT Awards Adjudication Committee will automatically determine the recipient.

Three Links Foundation Future Leaders Award

$1000

Awarded to Indigenous students from BC First Nations groups (non-status/self-identifying included), enrolled in a minimum 60% course load in any program or field. The students must demonstrate financial need. The students are expected to submit an application, a budget form and a letter to the Three Links Foundation explaining their educational goals and how the award will help them achieve those goals. The letter should also include a description of any leadership experience the student has demonstrated in their community. A $1000 bursary awarded to a full-time Indigenous student from BC First Nations groups (non-status/self-identifying included). The recipient must attend either the Merritt or Vancouver campus. The NVIT Registration Office must receive applications by 4:30 PM on March 15.

TransMountain Pipeline Bursary

Awarded to a second-year Environmental Resources Technology student who demonstrates all-round performance throughout the program. The Awards Adjudication Committee will determine the recipient.

Urban Spirit Foundation Scholarship

$500 x 2

Awarded to two (2) full-time Indigenous students enrolled in a 60% or higher course load at the NVIT Burnaby campus. The student must demonstrate high academic achievement by providing proof of a minimum of 2.0 GPA. Students must submit a letter (maximum of 500 words) describing how they foresee their journeys to success through post-secondary education and demonstrate financial need. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15.

Visual Arts Award

$1000

This award recognizes the artistic achievement of a continuing, full-time, NVIT student at any campus location with a minimum overall GPA of 2.33. In order to be eligible for this award, a visual medium (carving, painting, drawing, sculpture, etc). must be presented for submission to the Awards Adjudication Committee. Please note that photography submissions will not be considered. The selected recipient must also consent to having the artwork submitted, shared, and/or presented to the NVIT community and the public. The selected recipient’s artwork will be displayed on campus for a period of one year. The deadline to apply is 4:30 PM, March 15.
